Hoota Cave – The Mountain Gem and Silent History of the Earth
Location
Hoota Cave is located at the foothills of Jebel Shams in Wilayat Al Hamra, within Oman’s Al Dakhiliyah Governorate, approximately 230 km from Muscat. It is one of Oman’s most famous natural caves, and the first cave in the country developed and opened for organized tourism.
Geological Formation and Age
• The cave was formed over millions of years through the dissolution of limestone by underground water, creating vast underground chambers.
• Its estimated age exceeds 2 million years, representing a remarkable example of the geological history of the Western Hajar Mountains.
• Hoota Cave extends for about 5 kilometers, though only 850 meters are currently accessible to the public.
Interior Features and Natural Formations
Visitors to the cave will discover a stunning underground world, including:
• Stalactites and stalagmites in breathtaking shapes, resembling columns and delicate stone curtains.
• Underground lakes, the largest being the Great Hoota Lake, extending over 800 meters with a depth of up to 15 meters.
• Constant internal temperatures ranging between 20–25°C, making it comfortable for visitors year-round.
Unique Wildlife
Hoota Cave hosts rare and specialized cave-dwelling species, including:
• The blind fish (Garra barreimiae), a rare, transparent species adapted to life in complete darkness.
• Various bats and small invertebrates forming a balanced ecosystem within the cave.
Visitor Center and Cave Tour
• The cave is equipped with a comprehensive visitor center, including a geological museum explaining cave formation, rock types, and minerals.
• Visitors are transported from the reception area to the cave entrance via a small electric train along a 400-meter track.
• Inside the cave, walkways are illuminated with soft, energy-efficient lighting that highlights the formations without damaging them.
• A typical guided tour lasts around 45 minutes, providing an informative and immersive experience.
Visitor Guidelines
• Touching the delicate limestone formations is strictly prohibited.
• Flash photography inside the cave is not allowed.
• Comfortable footwear is recommended; heavy bags should be avoided.
